New Fronter

Our school uses a website called Fronter to give out some of our Home learning, and other schools may have used this too, and have probably noticed that it has completely changed. It's layout has changed and for some people it is a hassle, but it's probably going to be one of those things where we're going to have to get used to it.

Cake sale

Charity fundraising enrichment has arranged a cake sale on November 18th for Children In Need. Break time in the restaurant cakes start at £1+

Year 7 Science

In science, Year 7 have been learning about chemicals and how they react to things such as metals(zinc, copper), acids and other chemicals. We have also learnt about acids and alkalis and how they react, also about the differences between them.

The Forthcoming Year 7 Focus Day

On Monday the 17th of October all the Houses will be visiting St.Paul's Cathedral where we will be enjoying a workshop in sketching.  After that the different Houses will split up and visit their house churches. Strand will be viewing St Mary Le Strand. The Year 7s are looking forward to the trip and hope it will be a great succes.

Y8 Football

The Yr8 football team surprised the school by winning 3:2 against Compton. We played as well as we could, unfortunately we had no subs - we were all so exhausted by the end of the match!
Our coach (Mr Boal) guided us through the event. He helped us with the formations and he also chose the team that brought us closer to winning.

Year 9 Focus Day

A follow up from our previous focus day, we are carrying on choosing the perfect job preference that suits us. During the week we filled out a form and rated activities 1-14. We will be placed into groups with people who put the same preference, we will be spoken to by parents, teachers friends and other people outside of school. They will hopefully advise students who are interested in that certain career. Some of the options available were: law, pilot, design illustrations, architecture and many more.

GCSEs

In Year 10 students have started their three GCSE choices and the other GCSE subjects from History and Geography to ADT and Drama. There are also GCSE options where some students go to Friern Barnet for subjects like Spanish and Hair and Beauty. This shows that students are trusted with the responsibility to go that extra mile with learning. There are new subjects for example Business and Economics and also Music. There are subjects for more academic GCSE's also fun GCSES.  In ADT there is a mixture of topics that are being studied: Product Design and Fine Art and lots more. In history GCSE students are learning about America's history, for example the Economic boom. Drama students are doing improvisation and script work.

Business and Economics has some classes of only Wren students and some a mixture of Wren and Friern Barnet students.  Most business and Economic students have just started a new topic.  The first Topic Question was Can you beat the dragons?  The new question is Can you be the next Richard Branson? These GCSEs give students a chance to express different interests which they've not had the chance to do before.  It can also give students an idea for making sure that they know what job they want to do in the future from mathematician to lawyer.

English Yr7

This week in English Year 7 have been focusing on a book set in WW1; called Private Peaceful. They have been researching WW1 to help them understand the book better. Then they used their creative ideas and put all their information into a poster. The information about WW1 that they found helped them understand the emotions the characters were feeling. During their lessons they have been thinking about empathy and how individually they would feel if they were experiencing WW1 by writing a diary entry; describing how they would feel if they were living in trenches and doing some drama in pairs. One person was a news interviewer and the other a soldier. The reporter had to ask the soldier questions about life in WW1.

Y7 CATS TESTS

Year 7 CATS Tests
This week some of the year sevens did their CATs test. It is a range of non-verbal, verbal and maths questions. These tests were taken on computers and they are supposed to test the Year7s abilities. The reading and spelling test were taken in an English lesson. Normally a test is pressurising  but not here at Wren Academy as the teachers make sure you understand everything as it is just to test your ability so that the school knows what to help the Year 7s improve on.

Year 9 history

In Year 9 we're learning about the slave trade and how black people were treated when captured in Africa, also about how they were transported mostly from West Africa in either "Tight Pack" or "Loose Pack". Year 9 is also learning about whether they think that life on a plantation was good or not. To help them they are watching a film called "Roots" which is about a boy called "Kunta Kinte" that gets captured in Africa and transported to America,  he then gets sold in an auction to a white, plantation owner(a man because in the 1500s woman would be extremely restricted and would call their husband "MASTER".

Open Evening

On Wednesday the 5th of October Wren Academy had an open evening where students would take people around the school.  Some students were tour guides and some were showing the kinds of things you would do if you came to Wren Academy.

Year 9 focus day

On the 19th September Year 9s had a focus day, it was all about careers, budget planning and what we would like to do in the future. It was fun and interesting as we got to see on average on how much money we would need to be earning to be able to pay for the things that we want to own/ afford when we're at a working age (18+). We looked at booklets about differnet careers for us to choose in the future; it contained the average salary you earn, descriptions about it and qualifications you need to become it. We also used a special website called "Fast Tomato", the website basically lets you take a special questionnare that then gives you suggestions as to what careers you may want to take in the future. Or you can just look up a career and see the qualifications you need for it. :-)

Year 8 Enrichments!

Here at Wren Acdemy, we have a mixture of different enrichments on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Even when some of us don't like that certain activity we have been put down for, we all try to have fun in our enrichments, and try to achieve our best. On this page we want to show you some of what Year 8's and other years do in some of the the extra hours of the week . We hope you ENJOY our videos & pictures!!

Gardening

One Enrichment at Wren Academy is Gardening. We are currently in the process of planting bulbs to flower next year. We have weeded all of the beds so that they don't have any more weeds in them and it is starting to look really great!
